Lt Governor Sanguinetti said opioid addiction is a problem that knows no boundaries and can touch anyone and any family. She also said it is not something you can arrest your way out of.

Lt. Governor Sanguinetti has been put in charge of the Drug Taskforce and she came to Dixon to hold a Opioid Listening Session. She said the group wanted to hear of the success stories to see if they can be part of the over plan to combat the disease of addiction.

Sanguinetti said the Safe Passage Initiative, which began in Dixon, is a plan she would like to see implemented state wide.

However, she said places like Southern Illinois may not be able to have access to the resources needed for the program.

Accompanying Lt Governor Sanguinetti was the Director of the Illinois Department of Health, Dr Nirav Shah.

Shah said they needed to hear of the impact of heroin and opioid addiction as well as ideas. Shah said they are getting tons of ideas and this will help to formulate a plan that reflects the local battle against the epidemic. He added without the ideas they may come up with a plan that does not reflect the needs on the local level.

Joining the conversation were Representatives Tom Demmer and Tony McCombie as well as local health officials, law enforcement as recovering addicts.
